What is Clutch?
• Clutch is a device used in transmission system of a vehicle to engage and
disengage the engine to the transmission. Thus the clutch is located in between
engine and transmission (gear box).
State functions of clutches.
• To permit engagement or disengagement of a gear when the vehicle is stationary
and the engine is running.
• To transmit the engine power to the road wheels smoothly without shock to the
transmission system while setting the vehicle in motion.
• To permit the engaging of the gears when the vehicle is in motion without
damaging the gear wheels.
• To allow the engine to take up load gradually without shock or jerk.
